Nights without Statins

Are becoming the trend

They tell me that Statins

Make you go round the bend .

*

The newspapers tell us

They give it us straight

Just think of the money

its costing the state.

*

Cos folk who take Statins

Will never grow old

Just go on forever

Well thats what im told.

Like a zombie

Like a zombie

liiiiiiiiiiiike a zombeeeeeeee .

*

And so I am going

To fake my own death

I set off for the river

but I ran out of breath

*

So im going to eat grapefruit

and bacon and lard

and ill really look forward

To finding things hard

and I love you

Like I used toooooooo

Iiiiiif I can catch yoooooooooooo!

On one morn in the month of May

Down to the ferry we went one day

The wind was blowing the devil of a gale so instead we went out on the ale

*

Out on the Mersey Oh how the cold wind blew

I used me jersey to mop up the pools of spew.

*

When we got home we were tired and beat

so we looked in the cupboard for something to eat

there were taters carrots and onions too

so we had the stuff for an Irish stew

*

Oh flour and suet and a handfull of parsley too

I made a dumpling ---- to chuck in the Irish stew

*

We lobbed it in the pot and it looked complete

but soon we realised that we had no meat

I diddnt have a lot to spend

so I bought me a pound of the best scragg end

*

Oh flour and suet and a handfull of parsley too

I chucked my dumpling ---- into the Irish stew

*

It boiled for an hour and we found a ladle

then we all sat down at the kitchen table

I scooped it and poked it and stirred it around

but the big fat dumpling could not be found

*

Oh flour and suet and a handfull of parsley too

My lovely dumpling ------ lost in the Irish stew

*

It sat there proud all suet and dough

when it was struck by a carrot from down below

It was holed below the gravy line

and down it went for the very last time.

*

Oh flour and suet a handfull of parsley too

My lovely dumpling ------

Lost in the Irish stew !!!!!

The owners of the blackball line gave him his best command

and he left the Cleopatra

that was tied up on the Strand

he'd been running oil and indigo down in the Azores

Was the red haired scarface Skipper

By the name of Bully Forbes

The Blackball ship in Salthouse dock

was rigged and clean and sleek

her orders were for Melbourne

and she'd sail within the week

she was the Marco polo

and placed under Forbes command

Was to run with British emigrants

down to van Deimans land

At the table of the Blackball line Bully drank his wine

and then he rose to speak and said

this ship will make good time

I have my charts and plotted course

we'll race the southern ways

If the Devil doesn't take me I will beat 200 days

Down in the roaring forties as he ran before a gale

the passengers were terrified and begged him shorten sail

But Forbes had climbed the poop deck high with pistols levelled true

Shouting "Hell or Melbourne" man your posts

ya cowardly cringing crew

The crew had tried to jump the ship to dig Victoria's gold

But Forbes had ordered

tie em up and throw them in the hold

They towed the ship across the bar

and hauled it out to sea

then he opened up the hatches shouting

Set the bastards free .

When he rolled into Liverpool
He swaggered in to say
its sixty eight days back
Your ship is anchored in the bay
The Marco Polo stood four square
Forbes had proved his worth
The pennant on the masthead read
"the fastest ship on earth"

Heres a song about fish to the tune of "Old Fid"

I'll sing you a song of the fish of the sea

and the fish on the fishmongers slab

theres a cod and a sole . a hake and a plaice

and a big yellow long legged crab.

Then a fellow came in and he purchesd the sole

and carried it home for his tea

the horrified cod looked across at the hake

said the hake this is no plaice for me.

The crab he looked up from his basket of ice

and he shuddered and said its no fun

as he looked at the parsley and lemon and salt

and some mayo spread out on a bun.

A fight had broke out in the filleting room

twas a quite viscious brawl and a tussle

till an amorous squid for the door made a bid

but he stopped 'cos he'd just pulled a mussel

The fight rumbled on and the filleters won

in a welter of blood ice and scales

then a big savage mullet got stopped by a bullet

from a gun fired by two killer whales .

The fishmonger bold had the lot of them soled

to a chip shop  for better or worse

the mutinous cod got battered and flogged

soused in vinegar salt and brown sauce.

Dont ask me where i've damn well been

dont ask me what i've done

I went back to the slab and I ate the big crab

with the mayo stuffed into the bun.

Don't ask me what I had for my tea
don't ask me what I did
Cos I was still starvin so I ate up the marlin
and followed it down with the squid .

Mary Webb Jo Martin and Rowena on the Cello

Uncle Al down there on the Bass!

Sun Inn and the famous "Kitchen Sessions in Conder farm in Dent , Thanks to Mick and Wendy ,

Sunday, 26 January 2014

Well the Famous White Star session is picking up nicely and we had a good audience and a few guest singers including Colin Batho! Always supportive of live music although it is probably not his particular branch of the folk community. We are playing a lot of the more commonly heard and popular songs at the moment . All singers and musicians are welcome !
We are developing a more "Maritime" slant and shanties and sea ballads fit well in the White Star with its predominantly nautical theme and of course the name!!
Next Wednesday is the third session and we are hoping for a good turnout.
Thanks Alfie and Jackie! Always friendly and hospitable serving good cask ale and of course on the Liverpool "Ale trail" registered with CAMRA .
Good music . Good ale .  Good company! Life dont get any better!!!!

Baltic fleet shanty night

Another success at the Baltic with 9/10 Below and Yesterdays Men , the session being run by Trim rig and a Doxy and hosting a night of singing and drinking which resulted in this August institution running out of beer despite having a famous brewery in the cellar! Need I say more? A night that exhausts the capacity of the boozer must be good! Quite like the old days again !!!
Songs from Jack Coutts and Bernie Davies and Richard and Jim Irvine all great and The Liverpool Shanty crew did two sets Followed by the Sunlight seadogs with some great renditions of some good shanties!
First Saturday of the Month so keep it clear and come along to see if we can drink em dry again!!!???

Happy new year!!

2013 is coming to a close and another new year begins in this calendar! All the best to my friends and the good people of the traditional music community ! The shanty singers and the balladeers who have given me so much pleasure down the years .
I am looking forward to the next dates in 2014 starting with The Belvedere on the 02 and the Baltic on the 04 , A flying start methinks!!
Easter weekend heralds the Ellesmere port Shanty festival (Not to be missed) and another gathering of musicians and storytellers in Dent in March , the date yet to be confirmed , but Mick at Conder farm is prepping up for a beer tent again , the last one was flattened by some interesting weather systems!! Oh well , thats Dent for ya!! Diddnt stop us from having a great time and producing some top class music!!

Thursday, 28 November 2013

First Saturday at the Baltic fleet coming up people! The last session was another cracker and the musicians and players are begining to queue to perform! The place is getting full and the atmosphere is great.
Trim rig and a Doxy the resident band and the Liverpool shanty crew have the "Baltic" as their "Mothership"
Liverpool is the home of the Sea Shanty and there is an international interest developing with guest shanty singers from the "Low Countries" visiting and giving us the delights of their great vocal skills.
Watch this space for the next guest performances.

The Belvedere singers and tunes session is a great afternoon session and Kelly has started lighting the log fire in the snug where we meet!
This is a traditional Victorian delight of a "Pub" in the truest sense of the word , No ersatz fittings or dusty hops hanging off the walls Just the original fittings and atmosphere.
This is the home of Liverpool Gin and a vast gin Menu exists for our pleasure expertly served and presented with Juniper berries and lemon!! This and an afternoon of traditional music is great!! Come along  give us a song and have a huge pork pie for lunch??

Liverpool shanty crew and a whole lot more.

Liverpool maritime museum at the Albert dock hosts a weekend of shanty singing on the 5&6 of October.
On Saturday the 5th there will be a feast of songs to keep our rich maritime tradition alive and well , these songs of chants and replies were sung to keep a rhythm for the sailors working on sails and ropes to keep in time to and were essential to the smooth running of a sailing boat .
Now then. If you sail across to the "Baltic Fleet" in Wapping (Just opposite the Wapping dock) there will be a great shanty session hosted by "Trim rig and a Doxy" with the "Liverpool shanty crew" and other outfits to entertain.
